Short Scarf in Star Stitch

After the christmas rush I treated myself on making something for myself: it's a short warm knitted scarf in starstitch.

The stitch I found on Ravelry.com, thanks to Pinterest.

It was the perfect project to finally use this gorgeous Scheepjes Wol Maxima yarn (50% wool/50% acrylic) purchased at wool boutique Steekje Los in Leiden. I had bought it for the vibrant colours, but with no idea in mind what to make from it.

The matching button I bought on the local market : it's enamel on coconutshell.

Cini the Cat & ThingLink

Here's Cini the Cat by Pini Piru on display in my personal "gallery". This screenprint has been on my wishlist for some months, so I'm very delighted to see her every day now. The artist is Kaylee Wu (7 jaar oud).

Next to Cini is a cat etching by Atelier 28. Which is very appropriate as Cini is screenprinted on handmade paper by Atelier 28.
On the other side there is a wooden sigarbox: it's cd case for the album Krankenhaus by Dutch band The Kift. De Kift's cd packaging are such nice pieces of art. It would be a shame to hide them in a cd rack.

Knitted City-Kitty

In 2009 I made a City-Kitty out of old T-shirts. I didn't want to just yarnbomb him somewhere in the city, but waited to find him a special destiny.

Thanks to the involvement of the artist Simone van Olst he is now on display this weekend for the Kunst Route (an art weekend in Leiden, the Netherlands).

Later this year he will go into auction for the national annual Red Cross benefit "3fm Serious Request". The cause for this year is women and than particular mothers in war and conflict zones. A cause that is close to my heart, for the years I have been involved with the womens movement.

The Weave Wave

Last weekend the Weaving Revolution took place in several Dutch towns. The event was organized by EtsyNL. Keep an eye on their Facebook page if you are interested in joining this kind of events, Etsy Labs, etc.
The first days were already succesfull in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. On Sunday I joined the 3rd gathering to weave in Utrecht @ the 'artist in residence' location of Casco.

Guided and inspired by Travis Meinolf people of all ages learned to weave and contributed to making a big blanket.
Travis is an American artist, now living in Berlin. You'll find a full overview of his projects on his website: Actionweaver . It was very interesting to (re)learn a traditional technique that is and has been used all over the world. ( I've done some dabbling in weaving when I was about 8 yrs old....),
Just as fascinating are the ideas behind it. Like the idea that me making a piece of fabric in my leisure time means it was made by someone who at that moment wanted to do that activity. While when I buy a piece of cloth in a store, it was probably made by someone who at the moment of producing would rather have been doing something else.

We were a small group in Utrecht, but very enthousiastic. Some were Etsy sellers and some were not. There was a birthday, there was yarn, there was cake (my Mighthy-Mighty-Goji-Berry-Cake recipe will be posted on this blog soon). :)

IJhallen : when every month it's queensday

When I (only recently) discovered the IJhallen car booth market, my first reaction was: Why didn't anybody tell about this?
But since then I got the same reaction from everyone else I told about this market. So I wasn't the only one in oblivian.

IJhallen is a huge flea market / car booth market in Amsterdam. In summer it's in open air (700 booths) and in winter indoors (500 booths).

This photo is of about a fifth of the market, to get an impression:

The market is super easy to reach for both Amsterdam people as out of towners:
From the Amsterdam Centraal station you take a free ferry to NDSM (about 10 minutes) and you walk to the IJhallen in a few more minutes.
Entrance is €4 for adults, €1.5 for children.

What's also nice: it is every first sunday of the month from 9.00 till 16.30, so after visiting IJhallen you can go to the free Sunday Market (12.00-18.00).
On the Sunday Market artists, designers and independent companies sell their products (fashion, organic food, handmade items). So you can make a real day of it!

Cycling through the Dutch landscape

Today was the warmest Easter Sunday since the history of temperature measuring in the Netherlands. So, like a lot of Dutch people, we went to the outdoors.
In our case: cycling through the "polder"-landscape surrounding my home town Leiden.

Of course I totally soaked myself in SPF 50+ to avoid sunburn.
And as usual: on my head a stylish, yet protective sunhat.
Sunhats are to become THE trend of summer 2011, even in the Netherlands!

On the photo you can see me showing of my newest design with a smaller brim (so it won't catch the wind when you're on your bike).

Now, you might expect an atmospheric photo of a Dutch cycling trip would have tulips, cows, windmills....

Yarn shops are dangerous!
At least for people like me. =^x^=

There they are, all cropped together on the shelfs in the stores cupboard. Their wee voices calling and luring me. ("Take me home. I am so super soft. Oh look at my colours. Feel my texture.")
I wish I could take them all home! But alas my budget forbids me.

For a couple of custom orders I needed yarn in colours I do not have on stock. So this week I had to go to both yarn shops in town.
So it was Ribbels on Saturday. I could just stare at their wall of yarn all afternoon.
And 'n Steekje Los today, where I bought these sockyarns for a custom order dog sweater:

I wonder which yarn she'll choose!

Both shops are very lovely, because the women working there really know their business.
In general I would say Ribbels got the bigger assortiment. And would maybe appeal more to the advantaged knitter.
But 'n Steekje Los has more convenient opening times. And might appeal more to the beginning knitter.
And I am very happy to have 2 yarnshops in town!

Yesterday was my first time attending the Sunday market as a seller.

The splashing sunshine wasn't the only surprise that day.

When boarding the bus that was to take me from the railway station to the fairground, I found myself surrounded by about fifty spotty teenage boys. As it turned out there was a computer game event in the neighbouring Westergas Fabriek.

Then there was a bear on a bike. Zsuzsa of ZsBcreations was quick enough to make a picture of it:

More awareness is needed about the toxics used in the main cottonproducing business. As a consumer I find that organic cotton products are usually only a fraction more expensive than chemical cotton...in Euros/Dollars.
But if you are looking at the REAL price we are paying, than a chemical cotton t-shirt costs a whole lot more!

I've been very productive this week. Besides making new sunhats I've also been shopping for new fabrics. Custom listing for the sunhat you always have dreamed of!

Not only do I just love hats. I also can never understand how on midday in midsummer people can walk outdoors without the comfortable shade of a sunhat.

My day at the SUNDAY MARKET in Amsterdam

Not scared off by all doom and gloom weather reports, a lot of people visited the Sunday Market in Amsterdam today. I was one of them.

One of the reasons was: it being an opportunity of saying hello to all the Etsy sellers who had a booth.

The other reason was that in autumn I would like to take my knitwear to a crafty / handmade market, so I am doing some field research.

The atmosphere on the Sunday market is relaxed and friendly. I liked the variation of crafts represented. There is something for everyone and on top of that delicious food available.

*On my way to the market it was my first time to travel with the OV Chip card (a public transport card) and I realised it was not convenient to put it in my wallet in my bag everytime I boarded or left a bus/train.

Crochet cozies

Summer is seriously on its way.
So it is about time I listed my new line of crochet cozies.

I made some fun looking bottle carriers with bow ties.
When your shopping, travelling or taking a walk with your dog it isn't always handy to carry around a big bag just for having some water at hand.
Now you can sling your water bottle over your shoulder and have both hands free ( for instance for taking photographs).

And you can also use these to gift wrap a bottle of wine in style!

In similar colours I crocheted some gadget cozies.
I found these funky buttons in a little crafty shop in Kingly Court (next to Carnaby Street, London).

The nature of many domestic cats is perfectly (or should I say purrrfectly?) captured by UK artist Helen Dalgairns.
The print "Her Majesty's Mattresses" is definitely in the top of my favourite listings. I can just picture it on the living room wall. So it won't be to long before I actually buy it =^x^=

The content expression on the cats face, the tiny crown and the use of colours and patterns just light up my heart every time I see it. The cat in the print reminds me of my cat Charlie who often sleeps on a pillow on top of the wardrobe.

EFA - CHARITY OF THE MONTH! april 2010

A couple of weeks ago I posted a blogpost about the Animal Ambulance in Alphen a/d Rijn (that's in the Netherlands). They unfortunately have to do without one of their 2 much needed ambulances, and don't have the funds to replace it. This animal rescue service has now been chosen as Charity of the Month by my friends at EFA.

What is EFA Artists Helping Animals?

EFA Artists Helping Animals is a group of more than 500 independent artists, independent craftspeople, independent vintage suppliers, and independent art and craft suppliers that combine their efforts to provide charitable relief to animals. EFA can be found as a Team on Etsy.com, an online marketplace for buying and selling handmade items. All members of EFA are also Etsy members.

This newsstory of last month grabbed my attention. It's a call for financial support of the Animal Ambulance in the Dutch town of Alphen a/d Rijn. This organization is not subsidized. They are depending on donations of animal lovers.

What does the Animal Ambulance Alphen a/d Rijn do?

"This Dutch animal ambulance service provides emergency care to injured animals and transports them to the vet. Also they transport animals to specialized shelters troughout the country. The ambulance staff is highly trained and in possesion of a diploma for Animal First Aid. As the ambulance is based in Alphen aan den Rijn they can guarantee to reach an emergency very quickly (even though they cover a large area-MM). Which of course is in the best interest of the animal.

Also for transporting your pet to the vet and back home, you can call upon the animal ambulance. (For instance if the pet's owner does not have the right transportation. They do ask for a small fee for this service. - MM) "

Why do the Animal Ambulance Alphen a/d Rijn need donations now?

"The volunteers at the Animal Ambulance in Alphen a/d Rijn have a big problem. One of the 2 vans was completely destroyed after a collision on wednesday January 27th 2010. This collision was not their fault and luckily no-one was hurt. But until there is a solution to replace this ambulance van animals in need will often have to wait longer before help arrives.

The animal ambulance needs to raise a few 10,000 euros /dollars for a new fully equiped ambulance , says the Ginet Groep which coordinate the ambulance. The insurance only covers day value of the van and none of the medical equipment/facilities of the ambulance.

The second ambulance is needed to cover the rides out of town. Almost daily it is used to return swans to their habitat, or to transport lost and found cats and dogs to the town of Zoetermeer. When the ambulance is out of town, and with the second car out of order, they can not always arrive at an emergency within 15 minutes anymore. "

The ambulance rescue a variety of animals, like neglected dogs, injured swans and abandoned bunnies:

The young ones need special attention. Time is essential in the rescue of these little ones.

Injured swans are often in need of the ambulance for transportation back to their habitat where they were found.

It's not just the fuzzy and feathery friends in need.

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland: Work in Progress

"Alice In Wonderland" is an ongoing source of inspiration for me.

Just like "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" I can reread the book to infinity and every time laugh out loud. I think what fascinates me most in both books is how the absurdity and impossible are presented as logical. It makes me question the so-called scientific facts and opens my mind to creativity.

Being a Tim Burton fan I can't wait for the upcoming movie to come out, so Alice is even more than ever present in my thoughts. And that naturally reflects in my creations. My new hats are all inspired by AiW: Cheshire Cat kitty hats, Queen of Hearts kitty hat, new Playing Card kitty hat (in progress) and upcoming: White Rabbit hat.

As you can see in the picture I already purchased some pink and purple mohair for a Cheshire Cat Scarf. =^x^=

Plastic bags

"A recent study says 22% of Dutch people think human behaviour has no influence on the climate changes on our planet."

My personal environmental battle at the moment is waste. Plastic waste to be precise.

I work in a shop. A shop were costumers ask for plastic bags. Even when they already carry a bag were they could carry their purchases in.

So I've made myself a badge out of plastic bags.

It's Dutch. It means: "I am all for a plastic-bag-free planet." It seems to work. So far I've only had positive responses and I've had to hand out less plastic bags.

A cat, a heater and the planet.

As a cat you won't get 18 without getting a little streetwise.

In human years Droppie would be in her 80s now, so you can imagine her expecting to be treated as such.
Two years ago her health was getting worse due to kidney problems and she started to lose a lot of weigth. We tried to make her as comfortable as possible. However in wintertime our livingroom can be a bit chilly. My boyfriend and I usually put on an extra sweater, and personally I love a comfy blanket. Neither of us like the stuffiness and warmth of the air when the heater is on, so we save that for the really cold days.
But a blanket wasn't enough for her royal highness Droppie. She would sit on the sofa, meow loudly while staring at the switch for the heater (I told you she is smart).
And as we did feel sorry for her feeling so poorly we often gave in.

I wasn't happy with the situation though. For one it made our energy bill more expensive, and more importantly I hate wasting energy.
Droppie did try helping us find a solution. When the heating was of she would sleep on modems and other warm devices. I loved the brilliance of her idea: inventing a machine that collects waste heat from electronic devices, and re-use that to keep pets warm.
If there is anyone who could make that happen, they are welcome to use this idea!

In the meantime I did find a more environmental friendlier solution than heating the whole room: a rechargable bedwarmer. It's a hot bottle, but without hot water. It's safe for babies, so why not use it for a cat?
I took a chance of buying. Like most cats, she prefers to use things that were not specifically required for her. But here's the proof: she loves it!

Storm:

Open air booths are no fun when it's stormy. We were very unlucky with the weather on the Open Day at the animal shelter. The rain and wind made me run after my merchandise a couple of times, and kept away visitors (a festival in the city centre did not help us either) . But I managed to get some sales, and saw a very happy little girl shine with her new kitty hat. So it was worth it anyways.

On the bright side: I'll have a lot of new hats to add to my shop now. Tomorrow will be photoshooting time and adding new listings.

Oct 3, 2009: Open Day at the animal shelter

I am preparing for the annual Open Day at the Animal Shelter Stevenshage I support. I have had my own booth there since 2oo6. To sell "Hats for People: Cash for Cats".

I usually create some additional items for selling. Cat toys are always a big hit there.

And last year I succesfully introduced the gift-bags and envelopes I made of animal calenders.

Of course I am always hoping to sell some cat scarves and kitty hats as well.

The Open Day is just 10 days away now:

October 3rd 2009.

As it happens this same day is also a big fiesta in Leiden (in celebration of being liberated from the Spanish 435 years ago) with a fair, a parade and quite a lot of eating and drinking.

I'm hoping to see the people who'll want to escape the crowdy city centre of Leiden and come over to visit Animal Shelter Stevenshage.

I love crafty contests. They challenge me to think out of the box and try new things.

In a Dutch magazine Handwerken Zonder Grenzen there is a contest to make a design for a yarn called Hoooked zpagetti. This yarn is a tube of jersey made of rest materials from the fabric and fashion industries.

Since I didn't have the yarn at hand I made my own version to get a material with similar properties. I cut up 2 t-shirts in two long bands of jersey yarn.

With this I knitted my design in dropped stitches on needles sz 10.

And here's the result: a "Stads-Kat" (="City-Kitty") It's a cozy for the small poles you find in a lot of Dutch towns. I did it in red and white because many cities, like my own, have those as their town-colours. And the candy stripe effect makes it an original decoration for the upcoming holidays!

Her questions really challenged me to describe the artistic development as well as the animal charity goal of my project. About the latter I am used to talk, but my creative side is less structured and outlined in my head. So it was a real pleasure to talk to Annette.

Magic scissors - The Art Of Lotte Reiniger

Last sunday the fashion designers Victor & Rolf were guests on the Dutch tv programme Zomergasten ("Summerguests"). They were invited to show excerpts from movies/television and explain why they wanted to share these. The first film of their choice was a part of "Cinderella" by Lotte Reiniger. The interesting opening scene with scissors and the strong black silhouettes were a clear connection with the work of V&R.

For me this was a first introduction to Lotte Reinigers work. Lotte Reiniger made silhouette movies in the early 20th century. She used shadow puppets and a stop motion technique. Truly amazing!

I tried to find a fragment of the same Cinderella on YouTube, but unfortunately I could only find a version from 1954. Apparently the folks in the fifties thought a silent movie was "so 1920s" so they decided to add a narrator. I preferred it with just music.

However I did find a part of a documentary,

and a beautiful movie "Das Lebende Marmorbild (Calathea)",

There is really not an excuse not to wear a hat: winter or summer, party or work: there is some head wear for every occasion. A hat does put the finishing tough to an outfit, but of course you must feel comfortable and selfconfident enough to wear it.

But here comes the magic of the hat: it actually does give your selfconfidence an extra boost.

I've improved the first bonnet design to a reversible version.

Now you can wear it in 4 different ways: Inside out, back to front, all the way around! =^x^=

Here are the 3 so far with pointy flaps. I'll make some more with the more 'modest' round flaps.

Gothic Laura Ingalls goes Dutch

Since I was close to a sunstroke 2 weeks ago I decided it was time for another good sunhat. I am currently working on some different designs.

Keeping in mind that my head is actually quite large I wanted a shape that would not be so size-related.

In mind came Laura Ingalls' yellow bonnet (too many reruns of The Little House On The Prairie =^x^= ), but in a kawaii fabric version. This option will also be explored in the future.

But now I got side tracked by the idea of combining it with Dutch traditional folk wear.

In Dutch tradional costume the women often have a lace hat or bonnet. And particularly in Zeeland they sometimes wear starch striped, floral or plaid fabric to cover chest and shoulders. This is for instance the case in Spakenburg. I decided to use that starch printed fabric for the hat to emphasis the simple lines.

The shimmery "mirrors" completed the Dutch influence.

Are mermaids pink haired perky creatures splashing in blue water while singing with their jolly starfish friends?

Not in my world.Mermaids must live in the deepest part of the ocean, where the sunlight won't come. Plankton, jelly fish and nuclear waste surrounds them. Nothing romantic about it. They are just queens of seaweed.

Alice's Fusion Tea Party

This afternoon I went to the free 'Land Of The Rising Sense' art festival in Leiden. Mainly because I was intrigued by Toyoko Shimada's Alice's Fusion Tea Party.

I attended observed a Japanese tea ceremony and participated in a Chinese. It was both educational and fun.

The art festival is not very big. But if you go tomorrow (Sunday 14th) there is a lecture about Shojo culture, kawaii etc as well. You might see me there again, as the Scheltema complex is only a short walk away from my house and the admittance is free.

In the museum next door (Lakenhal) there is also a Japan themed exposition. So make a day of it!

I never seem to know which crafty market takes place when & where in the Netherlands. So I added the Google Calendar gadget to my blog at the bottom of the page.

I entered the markets I found on the web to the calendar. I'm sure there are more, so please do send me TIPS about upcoming handmade/art/craft markets.
I am looking for markets with booths from artists, designers, crafty people.
So please no tips about wholesale commercial creative supplies markets.

For this year I plan to visit some of the crafty markets purely as a visitor/buyer, and to maybe meet some artists I only know from the web.
I know from experience that once you have a booth you usually are stuck there for most of the day.
Also I have mainly knitted hats on stock, not much use for a summer market. To expand my summer collection is high on my priority list.

Getting inspired: Audax Textielmuseum Tilburg

Often fellow crafters/artisans ask in the forums what to do when you have a creative block.

One of the advices that is given is: clear your mind, get outside, take a long walk. And it is true. That can get you focused again.

But what if that's not enough? Another advice sometimes is: go to a museum. For me, if I'm stuck creatively, that usually has an opposite effect. I see all that great artwork. And back come the regrets of not choosing the art academy when I was younger. I see works I could never ever have the skills to create myself, or worse: I see things I could have made technically and ask: "Why didn't I think of that?".

So it depends on the kind of museum you choose. Today I went to Audax Textielmuseum Tilburg And that is a great way to get inspiration. There are so many techniques and materials on display that my mind went into 'creative upload mode' from the moment I stepped in.

My favourite hall was the Textiellab: big noisy weaving machines are providing a constant beat to rise your energy level. There are knitting machines, laser machines, 'tuften', dying, lots of yarns and lots of fibers everywhere. The machines are available for hire to artist, students etc. You can't take photo's in the museum, but these I took from their press release to give you an impression:

Gig review: Mala Vita

Band: Mala Vita

Mala Vita is Balkan Ska Pop meets Rage Against the Machine meets Rumba Gypsy Rock (with a splash of reggea). The lyrics are mostly Italian but also Spanish, French and English. It is music and lyrics for the true global citizen. Borders only create exiles, a means to shut people out from a place that once was their home. If that place even still exist. A lot of the songs the band played tonight are from the new (third) album En Exilio.
I do not speak Italian, nor Spanish or French, but the power of Mala Vita is in the international language of music. It makes you feel the emotions, the protest and the wish to live and be heared. It makes you want to shout (and jump..., but more about that later).

The roots of the bandmembers are in Bosnia, Serbia, The Netherlands and Italy. On the current tour they got a enthousiastic following. Actually the frontman Mikhael is as cute as a button, if I'd been 25 years younger I also might be swooning like these neat & sweet looking girls. Right from the first song the girls pogo-ed and jumped around in the mosh pit. In the most neat and friendliest way possible. Halfway the concert the tougher punk crowd took over the pit. But by that time the whole venue was jumping up and down. After a hard days work my boyfriend and I didn't really have the stamina to join in, but we fake-jumped pretty convincing. (Bending knees and raising up).

Because of the musical rainbow of international influences Mala Vita will interest a wide audience, but with keeping a strong identity of their own.

After her worldwide journey (from Scotland to the US, then back across the ocean to the Netherlands) Arabella "Blue Star, White Star" could be picked up by me, her winner, at the postoffice.

The raffle I won her in was for the Buckeye House Rabbit Society: www.ohare.org for more information on this animal charity.

She looks stunning, and I am sure she would love to accompany me to the Animal Shelter 50th anniversary party. It's a good thing Annette of Dragon House Of Yuen packed some businesscards in the bag, I'll surely be needing them.

I have taken the big step of changing shops, in order to have a more unique shop name.

The name "makemesmile" usually is already taken as a username, so I ended up with using 2 different names on the internet.

Another change is that I will no longer have seperate sections for the items for animal charity.

In the new shop 50% of proceeds of ALL items will go to Stevenhage animal shelter, with exception of the cat toys (100% for the animals).

A couple of years ago (back in the days when I was selling on Ebay) I've made quite some custom order cupcake toddler hats. Thanks to the statistics of Google Analatics, I've found out that the one cupcake hat I had listed actually attracts some visitors to my shop on Etsy (makemesmile.etsy.com).

So when I was explaining to the lady the footbath salt worked "basically with two effective ingredients, the salt and the herbs....", she snobbed me for the adverb. "Basically?", she interupted me in a high pitched voice, "basically?...I don't buy anything for basically." She stuck her nose in the air and marched out of the shop. At first I was both flabbergasted and hurt by such rude behaviour.
Then it occurred to me she might need to stick her nose in the air even a bit higher. After all, she still had no solution for her smelly sweaty feet problem....

Catnip Toys - A Pair Of Blue Eyes

I don't have a seperate working area for my creative outbursts. And usually my cats are very relaxed and ignoring the balls of yarn, crochet and knitting needles etcetera.

Of course this laidback creative process gets brutally disrupted when trying to make a new load of catniptoys.

Allthough slowly falling apart, the 2 toys I made for them 1.5 year ago are still played with on a daily basis by Charlie, and occasionally by Droppie. So they don't need a new one. Well, that's what I think.

But the ladies have a different opinion. Charlie keeps tracking down where I hide the plastic bag with catnip, so I have to move it every 2 minutes to keep ahead of her.

Droppie on the other hand tries to get hold of the half finished product and keeps sniffing my hand while I'm crocheting.

Since we moved to our new home 5 years ago, I am on the lookout for a smashing piece of original art.

Although I still have some reservations of buying a work of art via the internet (spending a reasonable amount of money I DO want to 'feel' it in real life), one of the works of art in consideration is this one by Luiza Vizoli.

On the Dutch tv-channel "/geschiedenis" they're broadcasting episodes from Götterdämmerung 2000. A post-punk/wave/alternative music program from the early 80s (1982) with performances by such great (and then o so young) artists as Birthday Party, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Joy Division and Echo & the Bunnymen.

Music-meets-literature

Although 2 seperate events both evenings this weekend I saw a literature-meets-music performance.

The first one on Friday evening was the 20th anniversary tour of De Kift. This Dutch band combines punk, brass band, scraping chorus singing with lyrics from literature. Often lyrics will go about lost loves, lost lives, despair and be filled with melancholy. Every song is a pearl.

Eventhough the Crossing Border festival was sold out this weekend there were too many people who missed the show of Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto : a performance based upon the medieval novel "The Ship of Fools" by Sebastian Brant (1458).

The performance was a strong combination of electronic music, traditional music, video performance. The themes reffered to essential human issues which are of all times, quite similar to the issues of seven deadly sins. But then presented with a contemporary vision.

Very impressive.

At The Fair - Open Asieldag 2008

It was a succesful day at the fair last Saturday. This is an annual fair at the Animal Shelter Stevenshage to raise some funds. it was my 3rd year at the fair now. I sold about the same as last year. Especially the cat toys and the upcycled calender gift bags were a hit!

I also sold a few kitty hats.

Dutch people don't like to stand out in a crowd to much. So here kitty hats are mainly seen as a childrens accessory. My international market is more women from 15- 35 and beyond.

So the rest of the week I'm going to be busy to add all the new hats and scarfs to Etsy.

I got myself a new camera last week.

The old and faithful one from 2003 was getting more and more trouble with correctly showing the colours. As I'm selling via the internet true colours are essential.

It also meant an upgrade from 3.2 straigth to 10.1 pixels.

Naturally my cats positioned themself in all kind of photo-moment-worthy poses to catch my camera's attention.

Ive made 2 versions: The first one (plum and black) is all knit. The second one (raspberry and white) has the mask crocheted instead of knit.

Knitting on the train

I just finished another kitty hat.

I'm actually working on another project: a custom order scarf.
But yesterday I had some train traveling to do.
This means: starting on a new hat.

The first threequarter of a hat I always knit on a circular needle, which has a lot of benefits in the train:
1. you don't poke your fellow traveler

2. you don't lose any stitches

3. it fits in my handbag!

4. there is no wasted time, when the train stops for 10 minutes in the middle of nowhere

5. never loose an opportunity to hand out a businesscard =^x^=

I get a lot of questions about what I'm making, where I learned to knit, how it works with the circular needle...

My name is Ama...
Actually, my name is Annemarie, which is a really boring name in Dutch, especially after a band in the 80's made a song about a girl named Annemarie who was really, really dull. So I took out the most commonly used vowel and consonant(?) e & n and changed my named to Amari. People started calling me Ama as a short version of that and that stuck.

I know it is also used as a name in Africa, and I think also in Japan. That's the story of my name =^x^=

So it doesn't mean anything (yet) like "lol". But maybe it will...one day.(Always Making Art, Another Miserable Alien, Acting Meow Adorable...) ;-D
Any cool suggestions to what AMA should/could mean are welcome!
I'll go back to my knitting now :) :)

ALICE by Theater Gajes

Last year I experienced the wonderful street theater show "Alice" by Theater Gajes in Leiden. I love the costums, the surprising twists and the adaptation of the tale. As they perform above and between the audience you are really drawn in the fantasy world, and you even get caught up in the chase. They are still performing this show in Holland and Germany.

On their website I saw the announcement of a new production: Don Quixote. I hope they come to Leiden again!

After knitting a zillion kitty hats, one would like some change. I saw a girl in the shop I work with a big headphone over her beanie and...the Headphone Hat was born.

I am thinking about making a cotton crochet version for summer, but for now there is this knitted acrylic one.

Plus point is that unlike the kitty hat (which, face it, is really a girly thing), the DJ Hat is unisex.

11/06/2006: Het interview is nu een week geleden gepubliceerd en ik heb al vele reacties gehad. Met name wil ik bedanken iedereen die (vaak anoniem) wol heeft gedoneerd aan dit project. Ik ben er erg blij mee, en zal er vele mooie mutsjes mee kunnen maken.
