Choosing a word for 2018

For 2018, instead of making resolutions, I have chosen a word of the year.

Often people find their New Year's resolutions falling through. Mine usually do. Whether they were specific goals (go to the gym 2 times per week) or more general (adapt a healthier lifestyle): a couple of months into the year the resolutions usually have moved to Oblivion-ville. Because, ...well, life.
Choosing a word is a way to voice your intentions for the year ahead. This word will guide you through opportunities and challenges, whatever life has in store for you.
The first time I read about the concept of 'a word for your year' was through Makelight. And I discovered there are a lot of people who have a word to help them focus on the direction they want to go (both in their personal as professional life). I had not picked a word for 2017 beforehand. But looking back on the year there was one word that had chosen me: 'strong'.

When 2018 approached I started to ponder about possible guiding words. Back on the road to recovery I thought I should pick a word that was active like a Phoenix rising from the flames: Reconnect, Change, Transformation, New Beginnings, Carry On and Go-Go-Go!
But these words did not feel quite right. In fact: I already felt tired just thinking about them!
When Emily shared the link to a free course by Susannah Conway, Find Your Word, I took the opportunity to discover what I really needed in 2018.

And I found a beautiful word: HALCYON
~ calm; peaceful; tranquil:
~ happy; joyful; carefree:
~ of or relating to the halcyon or kingfisher.
halcyon days : 14 days of calm weather at the winter solstice, when a mythical bird (identified with the kingfisher) was said to breed in a nest floating on calm seas.
Identified in Greek mythology with Alcyone/Halcyone, a daughter of Aeolus who, with her husband, Ceyx, was transformed into a kingfisher.
A word unknown to me until I looked it up in the dictionary a few years ago. (These Halcyon Days is a song by Revere).
What attracted me to this word is that it is a calmness between the storms. So 2019 can be all about the big dreams and transformation again, if I'm ready for it. But this year will be about tranquillity and taking time to heal.

One exercise of Susannah was writing down what you want more of. Which mainly became a list of what I want less of (meetings, deadlines, fuzz, noise, chatter, restrictions).
What I do want is more unplugging, more reading, more sleeping, more walking, more lightness, more creating, more being alone, more doing things with close friends.

I hope that when I find my halcyon, I can also find enjoyable moments to sparkle. So that will be my supporting active word: SPARKLE
~ to shine or glisten with little gleams of light, as a brilliant gem; glitter;
~ to be brilliant, lively, or vivacious
I made a Pinterest board to keep inspired by my words throughout the year.
